History of the Memmer Family

The Memmer roots are in the town of Kirkel in the detached area of Bavaria called the Rheinland Pfalz or palatinate. It is near the present German border of France and Luxembourg. The nearest Protestant church was in Neuhaeusel, which in turn was a part of the Limbach parish served by a single pastor. In 1794, in a battle between Ludwig Van Hohenlohe and Gen. Dormerswiller, the town was burned to the ground and all records destroyed. When the survivors returned, the pastor interviewed each family in an attempt to reconstruct the parish records. Thus records before 1794 are incomplete, relying on people’s memories at that time. This area passed back and forth between German and French rule. The marriage record of Wilhelm’s parents is in French with dates given using the French calendar instituted by Napoleon.
